Is Black the new Black?

In a flurry of controversy and discussion, Vogue Italia released their “black issue” this month, to highlight the lack of ethnic diversity within the fashion and modelling industries. The July publication, that went on sale with a 40% increased international print-run, features only black models including a stunning fold-out cover with Liya Kebede, Sessilee Lopez, Jourdan Dunn and Naomi Campbell. The editorial content, that includes pieces about Michelle Obama, and Ebony magazine, is separated by the normal ridiculously large amount of glossy high fashion advertising – however this time it is impossible not to notice (due to the stark contrast) the absolute lack of diversity among the models featured.

The fashion industry claims it isn’t racist, (or for that matter size-ist or ageist), but they sure do a lot of ignoring. They may claim that coloured models do not sell magazines, (just like anyone over a size 00 or the age of 22), but how would they know unless they tried? Women want to see role models on the covers of their magazines – people who they can aspire to be and who they may even be slightly envious of. With magazines currently full of the unattainable, I’m sure most would welcome such a change.

It has to be wondered though, will this blatant highlighting of the “whiteness” of our runways and fashion spreads cause change, or merely be something looked upon by the industry with mild curiosity?
